\nEast Moors steelworks in Cardiff was closed about 30 years ago, leaving many people out of work. It was shut on the first of May, a cold wet May Day. Penylan is a comfortable suburb of Cardiff, Roath and Rumney are less affluent suburbs closer to the steelworks. The \u2018two blue islands\u2019 are Flatholm and Steepholm, landmarks in the Bristol Channel, visible from the hills on which Cardiff is built. I was born and brought up in Cardiff, and lived in an old family house. The poem tells a true story, the details accurately noted.
