Two horizons:
\na far blue line where a ship
\ndiminishes and the evening sun
\nlets slip;
\nand submarine
\nwhere we glimpse stars and shoals
\nand shadowy water-gardens
\nof what’s beyond us.<\/p>\n
When the seal rises
\nshe rests her chin on the sea
\nas we do, and tames us with her gaze.
\nOn shore the elderly
\nbask beside their cars
\nat the edge of what they’ve lost,
\nand shade their eyes
\nand lift binoculars.<\/p>\n
She’s gone,
\napt to the sea’s grace
\nto watch us underwater from her place,
\nyou with your mask and fins,
\nstrolling the shallow gardens of the sea,
\nme, finding depth
\nwith a child’s flounder of limbs,
\nhauling downwards on our chains of breath.<\/p>\n
For a moment the old
\nlooking out to sea,
\nall earth’s weight beneath their folding chairs,
\nsee only flawless blue to the horizon,
\nwhile we in seconds of caught air,
\nswim down against buoyancy,
\nrolling in amnion
\nlike her September calf.<\/p>\n
